At some time in the future (possibly in 1472), an unknown author would learn about the Key to Hell and write the book with the Key's image on the back cover, thus closing the loop. The angel, Remiel, takes the Key to Hell from Mary and gives it to Lucifer, who is then cast into Hell.

After she rescues her brother and bring him to Heaven with the Moon Key, her mother and her younger brother direct her to the Silver City, whereupon entering she is transported back in time to the moment when Lucifer Morningstar was cast out. She forges it from a cache of Whispering Iron that was kept in the Harlequin Wardrobe. This gives Mary the idea to forge (what she believes at the time to be) a working replica. Spotting an image of the Key to Hell on the back cover, Mary inquires about the Key and Lucien explains its properties. In 1927, in the Library of Dream, Lucien shows Mary the book 'Laws and Statutes of Hell-1472-Revised Edition' to explain to her how to summon a demon to transport her to Hell. The series continues to be riveting, creepy, and fun.The key's creation was the result of a time loop in which Mary Locke was a part of. It’s a magical arms race with high stakes, where their enemy is more powerful and knows all the rules. More and more of them have been turning up, both to the kids themselves and to the entity that opposes them.

Key House has a lot of secrets, many of them taking the form of magical keys with incredible powers. One of the teenagers, Sam Lesser, escaped from a mental institution and followed them to Lovecraft to try to kill them again, with the assistance of a powerful but mysterious supernatural entity that is connected with Key House, the family estate in Lovecraft.
